PREVENTING BULLYING AND STRENGTHENING A POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE - A "GOOD WILL CHRISTMAS CALENDAR"

AS A TRADITION WE USED TO OPEN OWN CHRISTMAS CALENDAR DURING DECEMBER - IN PRE SCHOOL IT USED TO BE A SMALL GIFT FOR EACH CHILD. AS CHILDREN HAS THEIR OWN CALENDARS WITH TOYS AND CHOCOLATE AT HOMES WE STARTED TO THINK WHAT ELSE COULD WE SERVE INSTEAD OF MATERIAL GIFT. WE GOT AN IDEA OF “GOOD WILL”-CHAIR: EVERY DAY ONE CHILD HAS HIS/HER TURN TO SIT DOWN IN THIS CHAIR WHILE OTHER CHILDREN THINK ABOUT POSITIVE THINGS OF HIM/HER. CHILDREN TELL ALL POSITIVE THINGS OR SKILLS TO THAT ONE, WHOSE TURN IS TO SIT DOWN IN A “GOOD WILL”-CHAIR. AS A MEMORY TO TAKE HOME, THIS CHILD WILL HAVE A HAND MADE SNOWFLAKE WITH A DATE NUMBER.

THIS YEAR THE "GOOD WILL"-CALENDAR HAS POINTED OUT TO BE A SUCCES: CHILDREN HAVE NO PROBLEMS IN FINDING SOMETHING NICE TO SAY TO EVERYONE. ACTUALLY THEY ARE VERY SHARP-EYED IN THEIR COMMENTS AND HAVE NOTICED CAREFULLY EACH OTHER’S STRENGTHS AND SKILLS. THEY HAVE MENTIONED THINGS LIKE THIS: “YOU ARE A NICE FRIEND, AS YOU COME TO PLAY WITH ME”, “IT’S NICE TO PLAY WITH YOU”, “YOU ARE NICE”, “I LIKE TO PLAY WITH YOU, BECAUSE YOU HAVE A GOOD IMAGINATION”, “YOU HAVE A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR”, “YOU LET ME JOIN YOUR PLAYING”, “YOU ARE CUTE”, “I LIKE YOUR FRECKLES ON YOUR NOSE”, “YOU ARE GOOD AT FOOTBALL”, “YOU ARE GOOD AT HANDICRAFTS” ETC.

Preventing bullying and creating a positive atmosphere in the schoolyard

At our school, we attach great importance to the students' respect and respect for each other. This is the basic for a good intercourse and to avoid bullying. To achieve these goals we are talking a lot with our pupils in our classes.
In addition, last year a pupil's parliament was formed in which the pupils formulate their worries, problems and wishes regarding our school day. The avoidance or the reduction of aggression during our breaks were desired. It was very important for the pupils and the teachers that nobody feels alone during the time in the schoolyard. These thoughts were the reason that our school instituted a construction vehicle with play equipment.

We renovated this vehicle with the help of parents. After that each student left a handprint on the vehicle to show: “We are all responsible for a better atmosphere and a better cooperation”.

We are happy that our school had the possibility to buy some playing equipment. With the help of the equipment the pupils can find new ideas to play with each other now.

There is another point which is very important for us: The older students have to take the responsibility for the construction vehicle car because they have to lend the toys to the other students. They have to take care for it.

We have been doing this project for only a few weeks now. Of course the pupils are very happy with the new playing equipment. We think the idea of this project works but we have to observe it the next months. We hope it will be one point to avoid bullying at our school.
